Can I get a home visit dentist on the NHS?
How NHS home dental visits work, who may qualify, and how a private home visit compares.
This is one of the most common questions families ask, and the honest answer is: it depends. The NHS does provide some domiciliary (home-visit) dental care for people who are unable to attend a practice, but access, waiting times and what is covered vary a great deal from area to area. Many people find that arranging a private home visit is simply quicker and more certain.
Does the NHS do home dental visits?
In principle, yes. NHS community dental services and some general practices can arrange domiciliary visits for patients who genuinely cannot get to a surgery — for example because they are housebound or in a care home. In practice, availability is limited, referral is usually needed, and there can be a wait. Your GP, care-home manager or usual dentist is the best starting point for an NHS route.
Who might qualify?
- People who are housebound or bedbound
- Care-home residents unable to travel
- Patients whose medical condition prevents attending a clinic
Eligibility and normal NHS dental charges (or exemptions) apply, and it is decided case by case.
How a private home visit compares
Bedside Dental is a private service. People choose us when they want care arranged quickly, at a time that suits, without waiting for a referral to come through. What you get is clear and consistent:
- A GDC-registered dentist and nurse at every visit
- A CQC-regulated service with DBS-checked clinicians
- A written care plan after every visit
- A clear written quote first, from £350, with no obligation
Which should I choose?
If you can access NHS domiciliary care in your area and are content to wait, it is well worth exploring — start with your GP or usual dentist. If you need care sooner, or an NHS visit is not available where you live, a private home visit gives you certainty and a clear price. We are always happy to talk it through honestly.
